The Relational Cycle

Attuning to nonverbal cues for richer sessions

Dive into the psychosomatic building blocks of connection

The therapeutic alliance is the bedrock of everything we do

As therapists we are often looking for ways to reach "stuck" clients or deepen the work beyond cognitive interventions. Most therapists are trained to listen to the words. This workshop trains you to see the story the body is telling.

We'll explore the Relational Cycle—a predictable sequence of physical and emotional interactions—and show you how to use this knowledge to deepen connection, navigate ruptures, and understand your clients on a level that talk therapy alone cannot reach.

This is not a movement class. This is an observational and conceptual workshop. You will learn to simply notice—the way a client reaches for a glass of water, the way they pull back when setting a boundary, the way they yield into the chair. We give you the language and the framework to understand these moments.

By the end of this training you will:

  • Be able to instantly recognize if a client is in one of the four stages including 'Reach' (mobilizing for connection) or 'Grasp' (trying to control the outcome), allowing you to tailor your intervention in real-time;

  • Learn how to use the Relational Cycle as a diagnostic map for the therapeutic relationship itself. Is the alliance stuck in a 'Push-Pull' dynamic? This framework gives you the roadmap to find out why.

The Relational Cycle

Learn how to attune to non-verbal cues for richer sessions

The integration of somatic therapy into traditional psychotherapy marks a significant advancement in mental health care. Unlike conventional talk therapy, which primarily addresses thoughts and emotions, somatic therapy incorporates bodily sensations, movements, and gestures into the healing journey.

By integrating somatic techniques into clinical practice, therapists access deeper layers of experience, facilitating better understanding of counter-transference and experiential transformations for clients.

The Relational Cycle is a foundational concept in Gestalt therapy that describes the sequence of physical and underlying psychosomatic interactions that can give us valuable information about ourselves as well as our clients.  These stages illuminate how we navigate our physical and emotional interactions and are the building blocks of connection:

·  Yield (surrendering / connection)

·  Push (setting boundaries)

·  Reach (extending towards connection of other or environment/mobilizing)

·  Grasp and Pull (fully receiving)

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this workshop participants will be able to:

· List each stage of the relational cycle

· Describe each stage in the cycle

· Identify the role each stage plays in the cycle

· Recognize psychosomatic difference between each stage in cycle

· Identify the role the Relational Cycle plays in the therapeutic alliance
